Wolverine is probably one of the most published superheroes in modern times. In addition to his numerous solo series, he is a prominent member on multiple X-Men teams as well as more recently the Avengers. With so many stories out there, we’ve decided to put together a definitive list of the best of the best. This list, like our other top 25 comics such as our popular X-Men and Batman lists, is based off of numerous lists out there, giving a weighting to each selection of the best Wolverine stories. The lists used are either featured on popular sites, found within a forum or included in a collected edition, such as the recent Wolverine: The Adamantium Collection . The Top 25 Wolverine Stories Reputable Stories These stories don’t have universal appeal, but their significance in Wolverine’s publication history offer them a spot on this list. 25. Wolverine in Madripoor Year: 1990 Creators: Larry Hama, Marc Silvestri These issues begin one of the most acclaimed runs in Wolverine’s solo series as Larry Hama and Marc Silvestri take Logan back to Madripoor. It features the first appearance of Wolverine under his “Patch” alias, and introduces an interesting supporting cast such as Archie and the once and future Spider-Woman Jessica Drew. While there are better Madripoor stories out there, this one gets points for setting the scene.
The Spider-Man and X-Men reading orders have both been recently update. Here are a few changes. First, for Spider-Man Spider-Man & The Human Torch mini-series by Dan Slott has been moved. Original, they were spread out throughout the years, but are now placed near the time of publishing, as we became aware the stories were “Flashbacks”, clearly marked taking place in the past. The introduction portion was update to became a more leaner, meaner reference page. Details were included and revised up to and including Straczynski’s Amazing Spider-Man run up to the last Ezekiel Story. For X-Men The introductory portion was also update to become a much more leaner, yet handy, reference. Details were updated up to about, but not including, Morrison’s New X-Men. Marvel NOW! books were added. Avengers 47-49 added before Uncanny X-Men #43 (43.001) – How Magneto returns from space and Wanda gets depowered.
We’re back! Summer’s back and so is the indispensable Spider-Man. With a new era of Spider-Man now ongoing, we’re able to move the ball down the field a bit further in selecting a list of essential Spider-Man comics. But before we get down to the dirty, gritty details, here’s the how we decided which issues make our list: What are considered the best issues in the main Spider-Man Timeline are central Storylines that include an important change in status quo are also central Very important issues are marked with two asterisks (**), while issues that are part of those storylines, without the major event, are also included and marked with a diminutive one asterisks (*). Spider-Man Timeline from 1999-2005: What You Need To Know What makes the cut? What doesn’t? This era sees the renumbering of the Amazing Spider-Man and its subsequent “denumbering” at the milestone 500th issue. This era is marked by Peter and MJ’s crumbling relationship, whether it’s secrets driving them apart, or things like, say, getting kidnapped and faked deaths. The renumbering only caught on when J. Michael Straczynski started on Amazing Spider-Man with a story that put into question his very origins. This era includes this first arc JMS put together regarding Spider-Man’s hidden origin and his relation with Ezekiel. One thing purposeful omitted from this reading order is the “Sin’s Past” storyline. Though we generally hate to leave out important stories because of not liking the outcome or the quality, but this storyline, which involves revealing Norman Osborn father twins with Gwen Stacy, is all but forgotten in subsequent issues. Since it is so easy to gloss over this without impacting comprehension further down the road, we say “Skip It!”. Creators of the 1999-2005 Spider-Man Timeline Essential Issues The renumbering began with Howard Mackie writing the new Amazing Spider-Man and Peter Parker, Spider-Man, with John Byrne and John Romita Jr penciling those titles, respectively. However, the story really took off when J. Michael Straczynski and Paul Jenkins took over writing duty on those titles. Romita Jr moves over to Amazing while Humberto Ramos begins his nearly decades long career with Spider-Man over in Peter Parker. 1996-1998 Spider-Man Timeline Essential Titles Amazing Spider-Man starts anew, as does Peter Parker, Spider-Man, which (sort-of) switches over to the tnew Spectacular Spider-Man. Events within the 1996-1998 Spider-Man Timeline Essential Issues Here are the most important events in this Spider-Man Timeline period: Mattie Franklin takes on the Spider-Man mantle Peter secretly returns as Spider-Man, leaving Mattie her own “Spider-Woman” identity MJ and Peter have shaky relationship, and fail to reconcile before her plane explodes MJ is found alive, though she and Peter separate as she leaves on her own to restart her career in LA Peter leaves photography to become a high school teacher Ezekiel, and man with similar powers, convinces Peter his powers are “Totemic”, based on legend, and he must face his toughest villains. Eddie Brock gets cancer, and needs the venom symbiote to live MJ and Peter [...]

Where to Start Reading Iron Man Welcome to another installment of 10 Must-Read Comics! With these lists, we distill the essence of the character into 10 comics, either single issues or collected editions, which will give you the complete tour. To get started reading Iron Man comics, today’s featured character, choose the category that suits you best (are you looking at catching up to today’s issues? Want to read the critically acclaimed issues? Or maybe you want to see how the character developed historically?). Those of you more seasoned Iron Man fans might also like our complete Iron Man reading order. We’ve curated this list of 10 Iron Man comics that collectively will take you from novice to expert on all things regarding the Armored Avenger! Origins 1. Iron Man Season One there are plenty of Iron Man origin stories that would fit the bill for a new reader, though it you’re going to read just one, it’s best to choose carefully: Tales of Suspense #39 from 1963 is a great issue in terms of its historical footprint, as is Iron Man #1, and one of the latest retellings in Iron Man Iron Age by Kurt Busiek, it is perhaps the new Season One initiative that best retells Iron Man’s origins but still works as a great story regardless of this objective. Character Defining Stories These stories are found deep within Iron Man’s back catalogue and set the tone for all future series. They even work as expanded origin stories, as their effects are long lasting. They represent the fun, classic issues that really present the character as we grew to know him. 2. Beginning of the End This is the perfect Silver Age Iron Man story. It’s a very early take of superhero’s fall from grace, as Tony Stark loses his company in an impersonation plot. Read it here: Story originally told in: Iron Man #17 BUY Iron Man #18 BUY Iron Man #19 BUY Iron Man #20 BUY Iron Man #21 BUY Iron Man #22 BUY Iron Man #23 BUY 3. Doomquest When you think of Doctor Doom, you’ll probably first associate him with the Fantastic Four. Though when put on paper, Doom is the perfect nemesis for Tony Stark; both are wealthy, both intelligent, both use powered armor, yet their paths are completely divergent. See these two converge in the classic Doomquest storyline, which brings these two face-to-face as they should. Read it here: Story originally told in:: Iron Man #149 BUY Iron Man #150 BUY 4. Iron Monger Another nemesis that took time to introduce, the Iron Monger is Obadiah Stane, Stark’s competitor. Those of you familiar with the first Iron Man movie will find this name familiar. This is a classic Iron Man story that hits all the beats. Read it here: Story originally told in: Iron Man #193 BUY Iron Man #194 BUY Iron Man #195 BUY Iron Man #196 BUY Iron Man #197 BUY Iron Man #198 BUY Iron Man #199 BUY Iron [...]

It wasn’t in our plans to release a Green Lantern reading order just yet, but it has been requested a few times. At first, we believed that this franchise was already well-served in terms of reading orders. However, it seems most reading orders only focus on Geoff John’s run (though that is a great place to start if you want to catch up). That is why today we are releasing our complete Post-Crisis Green Lantern reading order. Like each of our reading orders, it is unique in its presentation; this reading order takes into account the various active Green Lanterns, allowing you to filter the reading order for a single character. This gives you the possibility to create a Hal Jordan Green Lantern reading order, a John Stewart Green Lantern Reading order, etc. This is the only reading order we’ve seen that merges all of these characters reading orders into one main list, giving you a great resource to order your Green Lantern collection. While it focuses on the Post-Crisis Green Lantern era, you still can use it for your New 52 reading order, as much of the Green Lantern continuity remains intact, and therefore these issues are still somewhat canon.
Similar to our popular X-Men Timeline of Events, we’ve gone ahead and done one for the Ol’ Webhead himself. This list details the major happenings that have a lasting effect on Peter Parker, which are either still in play today, or at least changed Spidey’s world for a significant period of time. SPOILER WARNING! If you haven’t already guessed, this list of events will spoil what happens in Spider-Man comics. The dates listed below are in relation comics published this year (2013) are current, extrapolating from that point using Marvel’s loose 3-or-4-years-to-one rule. Also included is Peter’s estimated age. Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man When: 12 to 16 years ago (published 1963-64) Peter’s Age: From about 15 to 17 years old. In these classic first Spider-Man stories, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko do something completely unseen at the time, a teenage superhero who doesn’t always win at the end. Most of Peter’s most important villains and supporting cast are all introduced very early on. When: 11 to 15 years ago (published 1965-1966) Peter’s Age: about 18 to 19 years old. Peter graduates high school and enrolls to Empire State University. He meets his future bestie Harry Osborn, his future Girlfriend Gwen Stacy and meets his future nemesis, Norman Osborn (whom he met as the Green Goblin prior to this) as they are both unmasked. At this point, Ditko ends his run with the great “If This My Destiny” and few issues to spare, and John Romita Sr. joins and slowly makes the characters his own, giving us the definitive Gwen Stacy image. We also finally meet Mary Jane Watson, whose introduction creates probably the most revered love triangle in comic book history.
It’s here, Marvelites! The complete 616 Avengers reading order! Well, it might not be complete yet, but we’re getting started at least. It contains stories from since it’s launch in 1960′s all the up to End Times, before the Marvel NOW! relaunch. In addition to keeping the X-Men and Spider-Man lists up to date, we’ll be putting in a lot of time to fill out the lists for creators, Avengers roster and other important notes. We’ll also start to gradually incorporate reading orders for Captain America, Thor and Iron Man, with the list being filterable so you’ll be able to limit the list to Avengers appearances only or character only reading orders. We’ll be focusing on our efforts on Iron Man first, in hopes of getting a complete Iron Man reading order incorporated into the list before the release of Iron Man 3 in theatres. We’ll then be going by order of upcoming movies, i.e. Thor, Captain America (Hey, we might even do a Cosmic Reading Order in time for Guardians of Galaxy!). Follow the link below to check out this reading order.
