Superman Reading Order (Post-Crisis)

Updated: December 22nd, 2013

Welcome to our complete Post-Crisis Superman Reading Order. With the arrival of the New 52 in 2011, DC Comics put a close to over two decades worth of continuity. What was known as the “Post-Crisis” era was laid to rest, with those stories getting a clear beginning and end. (For those not in the know, Post-Crisis refers to the issues after the cross over event “Crisis on the Infinite Earths”, which reset most of DC’s major superheros, giving them a modern take as of 1986).

The reading order below consist of the most complete listing of Superman comics of the post-crisis era in the order that they should be read.

Superman Reading Order : User’s Guide

Superman reading order
Our Superman reading order comes with its own order numbering system, extrapolated from the “triangle” numbers that appeared during a good portion of Superman books in this era. we here have read many issues of Superman in this era, but definitely not all of those listed below. Therefore, drop us a comment to let us know if something should be changed.  The books are by default listed in chronological order.

The list is also instantly filterable. That means you can make your list quickly, by searching for creators (Such as “Byrne” or “Jurgens”) or characters (“Superboy”) or even stories (“Reign of the Supermen”). We will be adding more characters and other details to the Post-Crisis Superman reading order as it evolves. Again, drop us a comment for requests of characters and such.

Currently, the entire “Superman family” is included, meaning mostly Supergirl (both), Superboy and Steel.  Eventually, we will add tags for everyone so you will be able to filter just one character (i.e. Superman only, Supergirl only, etc).

One of the best ways to get started is with John Byrne’s Man of Steel miniseries that begins or Superman Reading Order, which we here have seen in many dollar bins at our local comic shop.  It can also be found in trade paperback, though it is currently out of print.

  1. How do you deal with Superman: Secret Origin and The Man of Steel origins in this reading order? I see their placement but have read in articles that the info in both is contradictory. What was your thought about both in this continuity?

    1. Basically, Man of Steel is canon at the beginning, then, when you get to the later years, it gets replaced by Birthright and Secret Origin. Those new origins should be read at the moment they replace the older one.

That is the idea, though I hope this is what is reflected in the order!

  2. This is fantastic! Thank you!

One quick note: Supergirl (4th series) #12 has a footnote informing us that the issue takes place before #11. The trade also reprints the issues in the order of 10, 12, 11, 13, 14, …, so you probably ought to flip those two issues.

  3. Also no Blackest night on here – If I remember correctly, that was mainly green lantern story, but superman featured in his own comic (Blackest Night: Superman).

  4. What about Cosmic Odyssey mini-series from 1988 as well ad the one-shots: Superman: The Earth Stealers (1988) and Superman: For Earth (1991)?

  5. World’s Finest Year 6 in 1988? Robin is Dick Grayson im that comic, so it can’t be.

The Earth Stealers could be placed after or before World of Smallville, The Weird before the Superman & Big Barda affair, Cosmic Odyssey after Action Comics Weekly, maybe; and For Earth after AC 665.

    Greetings!

  6. Thanks so much for this extensive list!! I am currently organizing my books.
Question though, I see you put Adv of Superman Annual from 1995, in between MOS mini-series 2 and 3 from 1986. They are 9 years apart, is it s flashback continuity or something? Thanks!
